Japanese animated films and television series, known as anime, were largely influenced by Japanese manga and have become highly popular globally. Japanese comics, known as manga, developed in the mid-20th century and have become popular worldwide. Many Japanese media franchises have gained considerable global popularity and are among the world’s highest-grossing media franchises.
Having a front end means that this part of the body encounters stimuli, such as food, favouring cephalisation, the development of a head with sense organs and a mouth. The digestive chamber has two openings, a mouth and an anus, and in the Nephrozoa there is an internal body cavity, a coelom or pseudocoelom. Most members of Medusozoa, including jellyfish and most hydrozoans, have a polyp form as well, but also have a motile medusae stage. Members of the group Anthozoa, such as sea anemones, coral, and sea pens only are sessile polyps. Sponges lack the complex organisation found in most other animal phyla; their cells are differentiated, but in most cases not organised into distinct tissues, unlike all other animals.
Animals that eat both plants and meat are called omnivores. Other animals eat only meat and are called carnivores. Some animals eat only plants; they are called herbivores. The animal mode of nutrition is called heterotrophic because they get their food from other living organisms. Also, the cells of animals have different cell membranes to other eukaryotes like plants and fungi.

Popular Japanese beverages include sake, a brewed rice beverage that typically contains 14–17% alcohol and is made by multiple fermentation of rice. Japanese cuisine offers a vast array of regional specialties that use traditional recipes and local ingredients. Beginning in 2000, Japan implemented the Happy Monday System, which moved a number of national holidays to Monday in order to obtain a long weekend. Public holidays in Japan are regulated by the Public Holiday Law (国民の祝日に関する法律, Kokumin no Shukujitsu ni Kansuru Hōritsu) of 1948.
- Despite their morphological dissimilarity with all other animals, genetic evidence suggests sponges may be more closely related to other animals than the comb jellies are.
- Since 1981, the principal cause of death in Japan is cancer, which accounted for 27% of the total deaths in 2018—followed by cardiovascular diseases, which led to 15% of the deaths.
- Other human rights issues include the treatment of marginalized groups, such as ethnic minorities, refugees and asylum seekers.
- The first body fossils of animals appear in the Ediacaran, represented by forms such as Charnia and Spriggina.
- Japanese comics, known as manga, developed in the mid-20th century and have become popular worldwide.
- Japan’s constitution prohibits racial and religious discrimination, and the country is a signatory to numerous international human rights treaties.
- With a population of almost 123 million as of 2026, it is the world’s 11th most populous country.

In 1896, Japan established a civil code based on the German Bürgerliches Gesetzbuch, which remains in effect with post–World War II modifications. Since the late 19th century, the judicial system has been largely based on the civil law of Europe, notably Germany. The prime minister as the head of government has the power to appoint and dismiss Ministers of State, and is appointed by the emperor after being designated from among the members of the Diet.
The culture of Japan is well known around the world, particularly its popular culture as expressed in animation, art, comics, cuisine, fashion, films, music, television, theater, and video games. Widely considered a great power and the only Asian member of the G7, it maintains one of the world’s strongest militaries but has constitutionally renounced its right to declare war. Since the collapse of the Japanese asset price bubble in the early 1990s, it has experienced a prolonged period of economic stagnation referred to as the Lost Decades. It underwent rapid economic growth in the following decades and became one of the first major non-NATO allies of the U.S.
- The earliest works of Japanese literature include the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki chronicles and the Man’yōshū poetry anthology, all from the 8th century and written in Chinese characters.
- English has taken a major role in Japan as a business and international link language, and is a compulsory subject at the junior and senior high school levels.
- Japanese cuisine offers a vast array of regional specialties that use traditional recipes and local ingredients.
- The digestive chamber has two openings, a mouth and an anus, and in the Nephrozoa there is an internal body cavity, a coelom or pseudocoelom.
- Nippon, the original Sino-Japanese reading of the characters, is favored for official uses, including on Japanese banknotes and postage stamps.

For instance, around 25,000–27,000 species of nematodes have been described, while published estimates of the total number of nematode species include 10,000–20,000; 500,000; 10 million; and 100 million. The following table lists estimated numbers of described extant species for the major animal phyla, along with their principal habitats (terrestrial, fresh water, and marine), and free-living or parasitic ways of life. The blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) is the largest animal that has ever lived, weighing up to 190 tonnes and measuring up to 33.6 metres (110 ft) long. Vertebrates such as the lobe-finned fish Tiktaalik started to move on to land in the late Devonian, about 375 million years ago. Some benthic animals living close to hydrothermal vents and cold seeps on the dark sea floor consume organic matter produced through chemosynthesis (via oxidising inorganic compounds such as hydrogen sulfide) by archaea and bacteria.
After being defeated in the Pacific War and suffering the U.S. atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan surrendered in 1945 and came under Allied occupation until 1952. The Meiji period saw Japan pursue rapid industrialization, modernization, militarism, and overseas colonization. Between the 4th and 6th centuries, its kingdoms were united under an emperor in Nara and later in Heian-kyō. With a population of almost 123 million as of 2026, it is the world’s 11th most populous country.
The Jinshin War of 672, a bloody conflict between Prince Ōama and his nephew Prince Ōtomo, became a major catalyst for further administrative reforms. The true aim of the reforms was to bring about greater centralization and to enhance the power of the imperial court, which was also based on the governmental structure of China. It nationalized all land in Japan, to be distributed equally among cultivators, and ordered the compilation of a household registry as the basis for a new system of taxation.
It is thought to be one of the earliest predators, catching small prey with its nematocysts as modern cnidarians do. The apparent suddenness of the event may however be an artefact of the fossil record, rather than showing that all these animals appeared simultaneously. The first body fossils of animals appear in the Ediacaran, represented by forms such as Charnia and Spriggina.
Animals, plants, fungi, and some other living things have complex cells, so they are grouped together as eukaryotes. Animals (or basswin Metazoa) are living creatures with many cells that make up the kingdom Animalia. Animals may be listed or indexed by many criteria, including taxonomy, status as endangered species, their geographical location, and their portrayal and/or naming in human culture.
